Russia: Islamic Terrorists Attack Two Orthodox Churches, One Synagogue

By Tim Gamble

(This is an ongoing news event. Details are based on reporting out of Russia and may change as new information becomes available.)

At Least 20 People Killed, Including An Orthodox Priest and 12 Police Officers

Two churches, a synagogue and a police checkpoint were targeted by Islamic terrorists in the cities of Derbent and Makhachkala, resulting in at least 20 people killed and 46 injured. Among those murdered is a Russian Orthodox priest, 66-year-old Father Nikolai. whose throat was slit by the terrorists.

Six of the terrorists have been killed, and the manhunt for the others involved is ongoing. The names of the six dead terrorists have been released by Russian officials. All six are Muslims, with at least two of them being Wahhabis (a particularly fundamentalist Islamic sect originating out of Saudi Arabia).

The multiple attacks were well-coordinated, and several analysts have pointed out that the terrorists clearly had military training. Similar to the situation after the attack on Moscow's Crocus City Hall venue earlier this year, some sources are suggesting that the terrorists were aided by Ukraine, though no actual proof has been presented so far.
